How much do venues cost in South Africa?

Venue hire is usually the single biggest line item on a South African wedding budget, and it's also the one couples ask us about most. The honest answer is "it depends" — a Tuesday in July and a Saturday in March can be double the price for the exact same room. Below are typical ranges by guest count and region, what actually moves the number, and where the hidden costs hide.

Typical venue hire, by guest count

These are typical ranges for venue hire alone (the space, not catering) at a Saturday, in-season wedding. Treat them as a starting point for budgeting, not a quote — always confirm current pricing with the venue directly.

Guest countTypical venue hire
Up to 20 (micro wedding)R15,000 – R30,000
50 – 80R40,000 – R65,000
80 – 100R70,000 – R80,000
100+R70,000, climbing with guest count and venue tier

A well-known Winelands wine-farm venue on a peak-season Saturday commonly lands at R80,000–R120,000 for hire alone; broader wine-farm pricing across the Cape Winelands spans roughly R45,000–R150,000 depending on the estate, season and day of week. These figures are for the space — catering, drinks, décor, and the rest of your supplier list sit on top.

How the region changes the number

Cape Town and the Winelands carry a premium for the scenery: hire fees from roughly R30,000 to well over R150,000 before a single plate of food is served, and some estates price per guest instead of a flat hire fee — packages from around R2,100 per person with a guest minimum aren't unusual at the top end.

Johannesburg and Pretoria don't have vineyards or ocean views to charge for, which generally keeps venue hire more moderate than the Cape for a comparable guest count and finish level — though Sandton and Rosebank city venues sit closer to Cape Town pricing than the Muldersdrift or Hartbeespoort belt does.

Durban and KwaZulu-Natal spans everything from beachfront hotels to inland game lodges and garden estates in Kloof, Hillcrest and the North Coast — pricing tracks the venue type more than the region itself, so a beach hotel ballroom and a bushveld lodge an hour inland can differ substantially for a similar guest count. Popular North Coast and Hillcrest venues book out 6–12 months ahead for peak dates, which matters more for availability than for price, but the venues that fill first also tend to hold their rate card firmest.

As a rule of thumb, venues inside a major metro (Cape Town CBD/Atlantic Seaboard, Sandton, Durban's North Coast) tend to run R5,000–R10,000 higher than a comparable venue 30–60 minutes out, purely on location demand.

Venue hire vs. your total wedding budget

It helps to see venue hire in context. South African couples typically spend somewhere between R85,000 and R300,000 on a wedding overall, with venue and catering together usually the largest single share of that — often somewhere around a third to half of the total budget once you add food and drink to the bare hire fee. If your venue quote is coming in higher than that share of your overall number, it's worth re-checking what's bundled before you assume you need a bigger budget across the board.

Frequently asked questions

Is venue hire the same as the total cost of "getting married there"?
No. Hire is the fee for the space and whatever's bundled with it (tables, chairs, sometimes a coordinator). Catering, drinks, décor, photography and everything else are typically separate — always ask for a full breakdown, not just the hire figure, before comparing two venues.

Do all venues charge per guest instead of a flat fee?
No — it's a mix. Some quote one flat hire fee regardless of guest count (up to a capacity limit); others, especially at the higher end, price per person with a guest minimum. Ask which model a venue uses before you compare its number to another venue's.

Is a free basic listing on this site the same as a "featured" one?
Free listings show the venue's compiled details and a way to enquire. Featured listings are paid and always labelled — paying for placement doesn't change how accurate or complete a listing's information is; see our terms of use for how that works.
